    Project Background

    Swazi MTN is a well-known mobile operator in Eswatini, providing communication services to over 950,000 local users. Swazi MTN began offering mobile network services in Eswatini in 1998, fundamentally changing the daily lives of the local population. Over the years, as a long-term partner, Vision has provided various telecom power solutions for Swazi MTN.

    Nowadays, 4G and 5G network offers faster speeds and lower delays, creating great opportunities for many industries. However, it also increases the pressure on communication infrastructure. In Eswatini, where power supply infrastructure faces challenges, building and operating 4G and 5G networks also becomes a significant challenge. As a result, there is an urgent need for reliable backup power systems.

    To solve the problem of weak power supply for the network base station, Swazi MTN previously used power supply systems consisting of lead-acid batteries. Although traditional lead-acid batteries are affordable and widely used by telecom companies, they have disadvantages such as unstable discharge power, large volume and a short life cycle. Additionally, lead-acid batteries are difficult to maintain and usually have high maintenance costs. Therefore, finding a more stable, long-life, economical and easy-to-maintain alternative power supply for the telecom base stations has become a critical issue for Swazi MTN to address.

    Vision Telecom Power Solution

    To address this challenge, Vision provided Swazi MTN with an efficient, highly reliable, low-cost, and easy-to-maintain lithium battery solution. Compared to traditional lead-acid batteries, lithium batteries ensure reliable power supply for communication sites, high network stability and lower costs. Vision has been a stable partner for Swazi MTN over the years. After multiple rounds of communication and careful evaluation, Vision developed a lithium battery and outdoor power cabinet replacement solution that best meets the client's needs.

    This 48V 1000Ah telecom power supply system Vision designed for Swazi MTN includes five 48V 200Ah lithium batteries, equipped with AC/DC power sources, rectifiers, and solar modules.

    48V 200Ah lithium battery is a new type of intelligent battery pack developed by Vision. It’s a type of positive electrode made of LiFePO4 (LFP), which ensures high safety and long service life. It is suitable for the installation of 19-inch cabinets, and has advantages like:

    Project Value

    After the successful deployment of this power system in Eswatini, the site achieved zero faults over three years, reduced its total cost of ownership (TCO) by more than 18%. Due to the stability of this power supply system, Swazi MTN significantly improved the uptime for the sites.
